THE UK’S POTHOLE PROBLEM IS GETTING WORSE
February 2026
If it feels like the roads around Hampshire are rougher than ever lately, you’re definitely not imagining it.
One of the biggest motoring stories this February has been the sharp rise in pothole-related breakdowns across the UK. Recent reports show thousands of drivers suffering tyre damage, broken suspension components and wheel alignment issues after one of the wettest starts to the year in recent memory.
Here at Lodge Automotive in Liphook, we’ve already noticed an increase in vehicles coming in with damaged tyres, worn suspension bushes, cracked springs and steering alignment problems caused by poor road surfaces.
What many drivers don’t realise is that pothole damage isn’t always immediately obvious. Sometimes the symptoms appear gradually over several weeks. If your car starts pulling to one side, develops steering vibrations, or feels unstable over bumps, it’s worth getting it checked sooner rather than later.
Industry figures suggest pothole-related breakdown callouts have risen sharply compared with the same period last year, highlighting just how serious the issue has become for UK motorists.
Our advice to drivers is simple:
- Keep tyres inflated correctly
- Slow down through standing water where potholes may be hidden
- Have wheel alignment checked if the steering feels different
- Don’t ignore suspension noises or knocking sounds
Catching problems early can often prevent much larger repair bills later.
As always, if you’re unsure whether your vehicle has suffered damage, our team at Lodge Automotive is happy to inspect it and offer straightforward advice.
