VAPING IN CARS: COULD THE RULES CHANGE SOON?

New proposals from the Government could soon make it illegal to vape inside a vehicle when children are present, and the plans are already sparking debate among motorists across England.

At Lodge Automotive, we’re keeping our customers updated on the potential rule changes as part of wider efforts to improve public health and reduce children’s exposure to second-hand smoke and vapour.

The proposals are currently under public consultation, with members of the public able to share their views until May 8, 2026. Feedback gathered during the consultation period will help shape future legislation linked to the Tobacco and Vapes Bill currently moving through Parliament.

Smoking in vehicles carrying children has already been against the law in England and Wales for more than a decade, with fines issued to both the driver and the person smoking. Similar legislation has also been in place in Scotland since 2016.

The latest plans would expand those existing rules to cover vaping and heated tobacco products inside vehicles carrying under-18s. The Government is also reviewing whether further smoke-free restrictions should apply in places such as children’s playgrounds and areas surrounding healthcare settings.

Health officials supporting the proposals say exposure to second-hand smoke can contribute to serious health conditions, particularly among children and vulnerable individuals.

While the plans are still being reviewed, the consultation is expected to attract strong opinions from drivers, parents and vapers alike.
