ELECTRIC CARS TAKE ANOTHER BIG STEP FORWARD - WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR UK DRIVERS?
The automotive world continues to change rapidly, and one of the biggest developments we have been watching at Lodge Automotive is the continued growth of electric vehicles across the UK.
The latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed that July was another particularly strong month for new electric car registrations. Battery electric vehicle registrations increased by 44.5% compared with July 2025, with electric cars accounting for 27.5% of all new car registrations during the month. Overall, the UK new-car market also grew by 11.7%.
For us, the interesting part isn’t simply the headline percentage. It is what this tells us about the choices now available to motorists.
Electric vehicles have moved a long way from being a relatively niche option. There is now a much wider range of models, sizes and price points available, from small family cars through to SUVs and premium vehicles. At the same time, manufacturers are continuing to invest heavily in battery technology, charging infrastructure and electric drivetrains.
There are also more incentives and discounts appearing in the market, which are helping make some electric models more attractive to buyers.
However, we also recognise that an electric car isn’t automatically the right choice for every driver.
For anyone considering making the switch, we believe the most important thing is to look at how the vehicle will actually be used. How far do you typically travel? Do you have access to home charging? What sort of journeys do you make? And are you planning to keep the vehicle for several years?
For some motorists, an EV can make excellent sense. For others, a petrol, hybrid or plug-in hybrid vehicle may still be a better fit.
The July figures also highlighted another important trend. While battery electric registrations were growing strongly, petrol and diesel registrations continued to decline, while plug-in hybrids also experienced significant growth.
At Lodge Automotive, we think the key message for motorists is that there has never been more choice.
The transition towards electrification is clearly gathering pace, but choosing your next vehicle shouldn’t simply be about following a trend. It should be about finding the vehicle that suits your lifestyle, budget and driving requirements.
Whether you’re considering an electric car, hybrid, petrol or diesel vehicle, we believe informed advice is essential.
The automotive market is changing quickly, and we will continue to keep an eye on those changes so that our customers can make decisions based on what is right for them – rather than simply what happens to be the latest headline.
