Highway Code
Highway Code
We all had to study the Highway Code when learning to drive but how many of us keep up-to-date with all the new changes? At Lodge Automotive, we were particularly surprised by the changes to the ‘Hierarchy of Road Users’ that came into effect last year. And surprisingly, it is estimated that 55% of road users are still not aware of these new rules.
In a bid to make our roads safer and ensure heavier vehicles can be held to account, they now have the biggest responsibility to reduce the dangers they pose to more vulnerable road users like cyclists and pedestrians. With that in mind, the new guidance states that cyclists are allowed to ride two abreast, although they must be aware of any vehicles behind them that want to overtake. They are also allowed to ride in the middle of some quieter roads when there is slow-moving traffic. An additional update is that drivers must give way to pedestrians waiting to cross the road. So make sure you understand the new changes, that way we can all enjoy safer roads.
