Winter Driving

Winter Driving

We have been quite lucky with the milder weather recently but the new year usually signals much colder spells. At Lodge Automotive, we thought we’d look at some of the big mistakes people make when driving in winter to try to help you stay safe and avoid some pretty hefty fines.

Did you know if you fail to properly remove snow from your vehicle – in particular the windscreen and roof – before you set off on your journey, you could be hit with a fine of up to £2,500 for dangerous driving. You are also required to remove snow from your number plates which should not be blocked at any time and could land you with a £1,000 fine. Ouch.

Did you know that your windscreen must be clear and free from ice and mist before you drive. Check out a previous news article written in December 2021 (TIKTOK) for tips on how to safely de-ice your windscreen without causing any damage. It is advised that all drivers keep a scraper in their vehicle as part of a winter breakdown kit during the colder months. Other items that should be included in your winter breakdown kit are listed below:

  • Ice scraper and de-icer
  • Torch and spare batteries
  • Some warm clothes and blankets
  • High-visibility jacket
  • Boots with a good grip
  • First aid kit
  • Jump start cables
  • Empty fuel can
  • Food and drink
  • Shovel
  • 2 reflective warning signs
  • Locking wheel nut key
  • In-car charger
Be careful out there! We’re here if you need any help or advice. From the team at Lodge Automotive.
