Recent government announcements have introduced several changes that affect motorists. At Lodge Automotive, we’ve had plenty of customers asking what this means in practical terms for their vehicles and running costs.
Fuel Duty
Fuel duty remains frozen until April 2026. This is welcome news for drivers of petrol cars, diesel vans and larger SUVs, helping to keep everyday fuel costs more predictable.
Electric Vehicles and Road Tax
From April 2025, electric vehicle owners will begin paying Vehicle Excise Duty at the standard rate of £195 per year. A new pay per mile system has also been proposed from 2028, as part of longer term plans to reshape how road use is taxed.
Company Car Tax
Ultra low Benefit in Kind rates for company cars are set to remain in place until 2030. This continues to make hybrid and fully electric vehicles attractive options for business drivers.
Road Repairs
An additional £1.6 billion has been allocated nationwide for pothole repairs and road maintenance, which should help reduce vehicle damage caused by poor road surfaces.
If these changes have made you rethink your next vehicle, come and speak to our team. As an independent garage, we provide straightforward advice on whether petrol, hybrid or electric is the right choice for your driving habits and local roads.
